Which is right for heavy waste?

Heavy waste and weight limits: the part people miss

Volume and weight are not the same thing, and this catches people out on both skip types. An 8 yard skip filled to the top with soil or concrete is far too heavy to lift legally onto a lorry, and an overloaded skip cannot be collected. You then pay for a wasted journey and unload by hand.

Practical guidance for heavy loads:

• Fill roughly a third to a half of an 8 yard skip with dense material such as soil, rubble or concrete
• Spread the weight evenly across the base rather than piling it at one end
• Put heavy material in first, then layer lighter waste on top
• Never load above the rim, as skips must be level loaded to be sheeted
• Keep soil and rubble separate from general waste, as clean loads recycle better
